Volunteering
What hosts expect from volunteers
Volunteering with a community is a real exchange: your time and skills for learning, connection and often food and lodging. A few things make it work.
Before you apply
- Read the full opportunity, including the skills requested and the expected commitment.
- Only offer availability you can genuinely keep.
- Ask yourself honestly whether community living suits you for that length of time: shared spaces, shared meals, shared work.
Once you are approved
- Confirm your arrival plans with the host and show up when you said you would.
- If anything changes, tell the community as early as you can. A volunteer who cancels late can leave a real hole in a small team.
- Participate in the life of the place, not just the task list. That is where the value of the exchange lives, on both sides.
Communities remember great volunteers, and the reviews you earn build trust for your next application.
